I would just proceed cautiously without a rubber stopper. You can still turn 
the crank with a great measure of preciseness by prying between the engine 
stand attachment bolt(s) and the flywheel or flexplate ring gear. You just snug 
the piston to the stop, read your degree wheel, then snug the piston to the 
stop after rotating the crank in the opposite direction. These two readings 
will let you zero the degree wheel to your homemade pointer, then remove the 
piston stop altogether. Just don't force the piston against the stop - you're 
not going to damage anything if you go slow.

I realize now I should have done this before putting all my pistons in. 
Actually, I think it might be near impossible to get good readings without 
bunging up the top of the piston in the process. A rubber stopper over the bolt 
would probably kill the accuracy, right?
