I'm trying to imagine this and I'm wondering how i can measure the cam lift
with nothing to keep the pushrod stable at the top of the pushrod. The solid
lifter of course keeps it in place at the bottom but without a head on there
the push rod seems like it would just flop around at the top. Jim Hand's p.32
shows cam lift being measured with the head on. What am I missing here?

Thanks,

.........................................................................> Just
to clarify a bit, I mount the dial indicator on the deck, but I only use it to
measure the cam lift. I install a solid lifter and a pushrod, then configure
the dial indicator to measure the rise of the top of the pushrod. You can
measure cam lift with the head installed by using a metal rod to mount the dial
indicator. The rod needs to be threaded on one end to screw into a valve cover
screw hole. With the heads off, you could do the same thing with a head bolt
hole and not use the magnetic base, but the magnetic base is quick and easy and
I since don't have a lathe that's how I go about it. The piston stop just helps
you to accurately locate tdc.> > Sheen, one or two other things you can do
after degreeing the cam. Set your crank at tdc and carefully remove the degree
wheel. Slip the front cover on and the harmonic damper and check to see if your
timing marks are correctly aligned showing a match at zero degrees. You can
then remove the damper, put the degree wheel back on at zero degrees, and turn
the crank until you have located the maximum point of total ignition timing (I
think I went to 32 degrees, but "your mileage may vary"). Then slip the damper
back on and mark it for your desired total timing. I cut a very shallow notch
and painted it so it is easy to find with the engine running fast enough to
have all the mechanical advance in. That makes it very simple to set total
timing after you get it running.> David>
