You put a slight preload on the dial indicator. The pushrod won't flop around
if you're dial indicator is aligned straight down the long axis of the pushrod
and you start out on the base circle with a little preload. Set it up and you
will see that degreeing is really not difficult. Or install the heads.

I'm trying to imagine this and I'm wondering how i can measure the cam lift
with nothing to keep the pushrod stable at the top of the pushrod. The solid
lifter of course keeps it in place at the bottom but without a head on there
the push rod seems like it would just flop around at the top. Jim Hand's p.32
shows cam lift being measured with the head on. What am I missing here?
