That's one reason I always use a small magnet to pull the locks out.
Is the top of the engine still dry? If it's coated with oil I doubt that the lock would go that far inside the engine. I've lost bolts. etc. like that on cars before too. Step away for a while and then look again, I'll bet it's caught in the frame somewhere.

OK, good news and bad news. The good... I got all the inner springs out and locks back on without dropping a valve into the cylinder. I brought the pistons up to TDC and worked two sets at a time. The bad...I lost one lock. I thought it dropped outside of the engine, hit the subframe, slid down a bit and clinked on a couple frame parts before coming to
