I agree removing the inner spring is overkill for most cam/spring combinations 
but the 995-16 Comp Cam springs are really really stiff. So, I thought it would 
be good insurance. I don't think the lock is sitting in the oil pan. I tapped a 
mallet on the bottom of the pan looking to "bounce" it and listening for sound. 
Nothing. My bet, if it did fall into the engine, is it's sitting on the windage 
tray in between counterweights. The engine is semidry. I had to put oil on all 
parts to keep them from rusting but I haven't actually put the oil in yet. My 
fear is that it will move/vibrate over into the path of a counterweight that 
will either fling it out and it will drop in the pan without damage or it might 
get bound between counterwieght and windage tray and do some damage.
 
Definitely going to do some more searching tonight.
