Were the horsepower ratings in 1970 still Gross ratings ( I think so). In
later years, the ratings switched to Net (i.e. all accessories in place,
etc.), the compression went down, cams were smaller (i.e. less
duration/lift) and the exhausts were more restrictive (i.e. catalytic
converters, etc.). Add all that up and you get your delta.

Thanx for the heads up on the Edelbrocks needing a round port header.
Didn't know that. That is where this FGF list is a huge benefit. Lots of
guys with these little "unknown" tidbits.
You guys are all great!!
But I am still looking for an answer to my first question.
If I can pick up these (small) 15 heads (that have been redone) for a good
price, is it going to be a performance boost by getting the cr to the 10 : 1
range? Somehow they made 360 HP in 1970 with the smaller 1.96 / 1.66
valves. (Some sort of magic cam recipie?)
I appreciate all the opinions on what new heads to buy, but unfortunately
the money tree dried up and died a few years ago when I had kids. $2000+
just for new heads, then likely another $400+ for cam, pushrods & lifters,
and I haven't even opened up the motor yet. Ouch!
I'm hoping Rick W & I can pull the engine in the next couple of weeks. Can
you believe someone painted it red?? Yuck, it just looks wrong in there!!
Thanx for all the support,
Dion

On my previous Bird I spent a fortune to restore a pair of #12 heads.
If I were to do it again I would definitely consider a pair of KRE heads
instead.
That way you don't need any round port headers as you will with the
Edelbrock heads.

...and I would paint 'em blue!
