First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List .........................................................................
Thanx to all who replied to my head question. You've all been very helpful and gave me a lot to think about. I am not going to "settle" on small valve heads, but need to figure out the best way to get some power back into the 455. It seems to have good low rpm torque (wheel spin from a standstill) but just doesn't have the horsepower as I accelerate up. It feels like a 250 HP engine with lots of torque. I know there is more potential there, just not sure the best (or cheapest) way to get it. Brand new $2000 heads are not in the budget but restoring a decent flowing set of stock heads for half the money could be. As for what do I want to do with the car? I want to cruise it and install the 455 hood badges I already have, but I want some power to back them up. When the rice rocket or mustang pulls up to me at the light, I don't want to be embarrassed as I currently am. (Already happened) Don't want to run race gas, but our good gas up here is 92 octane so 11 : 1 compression should work even if I need to add some 104 octane boost. This was a very good discussion for my first question to the list and I really appreciate all the input. I am sure I'll have many more questions as I progress in this project.
