to terminate a burst is decided by the host controller and/or ATA device ...

Lots of situations exist to decide, including devices slipping revs, buffer�and�cache utilization (just to name a few situations, and many more probably exist that I don't know about since I don't make disk drives) while�hosts will terminate on buffer thresholds and�host bus latencies (PCI being today's favorite), and many�interesting reasons just based on the fact that good-old humans design these darn things and make some (hmmmm) funny design choices.

Also a player may limit the burst length to defend the strength of the crc.
