This is an interesting question since we are probably talking about using DMA with ATA and/or ATAPI devices that are attached to a "toy computer". "Toy computer" being a system with no error detection in the CPU, no error detection in the system cache memory or system main memory, no error detection on the "local buses" or on the PCI bus, no error detection in the "bridge logic" between the buses or between the PCI bus and the ATA interface. OH... wait a minute... We sell this things by the thousands to corporate IT departments for use in "mission critical" applications - they must not be toys!
