Log message:
1) Cleanups and a few failure races fixed.

Apparently XShm is failing when the X depth is 24 or 32bpp.  Works fine
when it's set to 8 or 16bpp.   The really odd thing is that it's a
"access to private resource denied" error.

I am inclined to blame the XServer, but I'm still digging around.
