I thought the whole point of open source was so that a company could come
along and get access to a well developed application free of cost and modify
it for commercial exploitation. It seems to me that Idaya are, doing just
that, commercially exploiting the FreeVSD code to make ProVSD which I
imagine is entirely different software.

I hope no one will start moaning at us when we launch our hosting service
that uses FreeVSD extensively because we are not sharing some of the
proprietary parts of the system which we have written with everyone.

I think one of the best things about open source is that you can't just pay
the highest price to have the best use of it and that instead you have to
work very hard to develop it and if you are nice you share your developments
with the community. That way all the contributors can sell good products
based around a solid core project.

I don't have much idea about how the GPL licensing works because I haven't
read much in to it but at the end of the day Idaya seem to have written
pretty much all of code in the core application (looking in the CVS update
log) and quite why they are being slated for all this work seems a bit
strange. They don't have any obligation to provide a new RPM for people as
soon as it is released and at the moment if I were then with the mood on
this list I would be thinking twice about why they should provide it.

Anyway I would like to say thank you to Nick, everyone at Idaya and also
everyone else who has contributed to FreeVSD and hope that from now on
everyone can do less moaning and more contributing to the development then
we will all benefit.

Next year we hope to make our first real contribution in the shape of a
comprehensive user manual and developers documentation to help fuel interest
in developing it also I will take this opportunity to let everyone know I am
doing the cat for FreeVSD in the ODP to promote awareness and if any hosting
companies want to be listed or if any one thinks their site fits please
submit it the URL is
http://dmoz.org/Computers/Software/Internet/Servers/FreeVSD/

Also if you don't like Idaya's products then you do have another option you
can either buy theirs or use FreeVSD and make your own add-ons to bring it
up to scratch. As long as they provide CVS to help the development I think
they are well within their rights and I am very grateful for them providing
CVS access for this project and for all the development.
