UPS ground ships from its "hub" in the south side of Chicago to the
West Coast by rail. Usually by a Union Pacific "unit
train" (dedicated to UPS).

It takes three days or slightly less to get to the hub in the San
Francisco area from the hub in Hodgkins, IL.

However ... get this ... the item will remain in the depot until the
am before the committed delivery date.

Meaning, on a "3 to 7 day" delivery commitment, the package will get
from Chicago to S.F. within the first three days, then the package
will sit in S.F. (usually in San Pablo) for three and a fraction
days, and then it will be delivered to the local UPS center at about
5 am on the day of committed delivery.

So far, UPS has never been later than 7 days, but they have also
never been even one day early, although they certainly had the
capability of doing so.

Retailers which have a different contract with UPS, say, 3 day
guaranteed delivery at zero or no extra cost will get the 3 day
service, and occasionally two days.

Hence, I strongly favor retailers which have special contracts with
parcel services.

One retailer which as a distribution center in L.A. can usually get
its merch to me overnight, even though I am getting free or paid for
three day service.

They have a contract with FedEx.
