I know the feeling. My school might not have more than 250ish kids
through all 4 grades right now, but seeing as I'm the only student
privileged to be able to enter the server room, no questions asked,
and seeing that my reputation for being able to fix (and break) stuff
so well (more fix than break, I'm currently back-logged, 4 desktops, a
personal project, my iBook, and the entire eMac lab are on the list)
that whenever something goes down, it's usually no more than a few
minutes before I'm beckoned to get it fixed (I've even been asked by
our IT guy who just showed up last year, and that's saying something,
he's a genius)
Anyways, I'm not trying to say that the iPad is a piece of crap, I
just don't like how limited it is for the power-user. I'm constantly
needing root access to everything, and being forced to jailbreak is
not my opinion of something I'd like to use. (I put linux on my iBook,
custom version, but compiled with a PPC kernel none the less... I just
like being able to have full control).
I don't mind Apple products at all. I own an entire Pile of Beige
beasts (Love 'em too) and have started adding colored items to my pile
too (2 iMacs, on tray, one slot load, both amazing) and have acquired
an iBook G3 500mhz, which I can't seem to keep from using late at
night when I should be doing homework (I love the battery live on it,
but the DC-In board is picky =( ) and seem to find it's
restricted-ness useful when I'm working on homework (It means that I
won't accidentally break a reference to something, and then spend the
next few hours repairing and hunting down that single line of code
that I screwed up, and I"ve got to take note never to do it again.)
Maybe in a few years, when there's some features I might like on the
iPad, I might get one (and if I have a larger budget than -$140 right
now).
It's honestly not that bad, but I like my choices wide open. I'll
probably get a We-Pad or a jooJoo just because I'd be more open to
using the environment that I"m used to, not the one I'd have to live
with.
I still do enjoy seeing how people respond to what I have to say about
stuff though, for the same price as the iPad, I"ll be getting a 4 core
desktop, clocked at 4.2ghz, 4gb ddr3 ram, a top-of-the-line
systemboard, and a 650W psu, plus a pair of 9Cell batteries for my
laptop, to get me through a college school day. I'd find that more
practical at the moment, but maybe my 5th year... It'd be nice to post
a "WTB: iPad, 2nd Gen, 32GB non-3G", just to enjoy yesteryear... heck
I"m still using my 2nd Gen Nano and loving the 30 minutes of battery,
the white screen issues, and the iffy clickwheel... I don't complain
about it, I just accept that for $0, you get what you pay for.
