Hmm. Sounds, indeed, like you have been reconfiguring the wiring, coincidental
to the start of your monitor problems. Finding what combination causes the
problem can be nearly impossible to solve, but I put my money on wiring being
to blame. You could try testing it in another location in the house. Assuming
that monitor has a VGA connector, you could even cart it to the Dell and try
it there. (Best to do this while your sister is away, lest she try to swap
when she sees how nice it is.) If the lines are still there, take it to the
local Apple service facility. The warrantee is probably just about up and this
will be your last chance to get it fix free. If it works properly at the shop,
you will know the trouble is on your end and will have gotten a free check up
out of the deal.

BTW, most libraries have telnet connections to their terminal servers. Here,
for example, you can get to both the Seattle and King County systems either by
dial up or telnet. The telnet connection is much faster.
