Hi Matthew,

I have cable too and some problems with the picture shimmering on my NEC
995 CRT monitor; it is noticeably worse at the highest resolution, even
though the Hz remains constant at 85. A friend with a degree in electrical
engineering thinks there might be a problem with ground loops here and I'm
wondering whether you might not have a ground loops problem, Matthew? My
friend says that ground loops are very, very common problems for people on
cable, though he says that most people aren't aware that that's the cause
of their problems.

He put up a page explaining the problem and how to test for it:

I am going to get around to testing for ground loops one of these days. Any
year now...

You don't also happen to notice a sound through your computer speakers when
you turn on or off something connected to the room's wiring, do you? I can
hear a pop when the flourescent lights on the overhead cabinet are turned
on or off.

Well, good luck on getting rid of your lines, Matthew. I am getting used to
the shimmering, sort of. I don't think I could get used to lines moving
down the screen so easily.

Best wishes,

P. S. I'm sorry about your electrical shock!
