Mergers and buyouts are as common in the disk drive business as any other.

Less common are outright licenses, such as when Western Digital was sold a
license to make complete duplicates of IBM designs (although not WD's present
generation, which appears to be all-WD) right down to the tooling marks on
the various castings. The *only* difference appeared to be the label design.
Oh, and the firmware, which was lacking a certain IBM-patented feature.

Maxtor had no SCSI offerings, and Quantum's UATA offerings were weak at best.

The merger is potentially good for both companies, not withstanding the fact
that Maxtor was nearly completely owned by Hyundai, and Hyundai is currently
undergoing a complete meltdown.

Tell your supplier you felt you were buying an Oldsmobile (Maxtor) but were
sold a Chevrolet instead (Quantum). The analogy is the same as those
so-called Oldsmobiles which were actually fitted with Chevy engines and other
major components.

Demand a refund, based upon the doctrine established in that famous
automobile case.

That's about the extent of your remedy.
