OK, I once tried quitting a bunch of programs and iTunes was still slow.
This time, I restarted and didn't launch anything except iTunes.  I'm back
to about 9x, but I'm not sure exactly what's causing the problem.
Apparently some program is starting a background process that's hogging
resources.  Tracking this down will be as tedious as an extension conflict.

I still think that most people who are already set up in Mac o/s 8 or 9 are
better off waiting a few more months before upgrading to X.  Many people
should wait a year or more.
