I really (as an amateur) suspect some files in the OSX system folder (or what

The Beige is the last of the "Old World" machines. Although conceptually all
Beige ROM functionality is contained in the ROM SIMM, the Beiges are treated
almost as if they were "New World" machines, in which much of the ROM code is
actually contained in a file in the System Folder called "Mac OS ROM". It is
through the mechanism of the Mac OS ROM taking precedence over the ROM SIMM
that your Rev. A Beige is able to handle Slave drives. But, that cannot
happen until after the system has been booted as otherwise the Mac OS ROM
code is not there to perform its magic.
