Oh Dave do not complicate you life so much. It sounds like you haven't installed anything in a long time. The constant usage of the computer requires checkups and repairs accordingly. You don't seem to have any repair utility like Norton, Disk Warrior or such which are very, extrictly necessary, as neccessary as the OS itself. Not only that when I was running OS 8.1, I found I had twice as many problems as with 9.1.
Your computer may have bitmap errors, catalog b-tree errors you don't even know if there is a problem with cross linked files which is devastating your drive could crash, (you could loose it from the desktop and loose everything) the only thing I know will fix that is Norton.
