Liliana,

I run Norton Utilities, the DiskDoctor and peedDisk, 3 or 4 times a week.
There always seems to be string errors and icons that it suggests to be
fixed. I reply 'Tes' to all of its messages, "Do you want to fix this?".

I have used Norton for many years, on the G3 nd on the Quadra 630 on OS 7.5.
What has never worked is AntiVirus. The instructions indicate that you need
to go to its web site, find the 'virus definition' file, download it, and
execute the update function. Did that, and it deleted and moved its files.
then said, "Reboot!", so I did.

Upon restarting and attempting to run AntiVirus again, it complained that it
couldn't find its files, and that it needed to be reloaded. So I attempted
to reinstall it. But you can NOT reinstall it, if it can find any of its
files. So you have to go looking for them, purge then, and reinstall. The
application as it exists on the CD is the only version you can use. It can
not be updated.

I run SpeedDisk on the HD's and ZIPs and disketted, because I have edited or
other wise modified files, and defragmentation needs to be done regulary.

So, I don't think the strange symptoms is due to a disk failure or a bad
operating system table, but I may be wrong.

The wierdist thing that happened a couple of months ago was: what appeared to
be an alias file, aparently was the FreeSpace table. It was over 3 GigaBtyes
in size, and could not be purged. So I moved files off the HD on to ZIP
disks. But that actually made things worse, because the 'alias' file got
bigger! I had to reformat and reinstall everything.

The odd thing that I am confused with now is: 768 MB of memory has been
installed, and I am getting error 1's and 3's with Netscape. Actually, now
it will not start at all, because there isn't enough memory. Explorer just
hangs after initiating a search, and attempting to go to the third page.
Meanwhile, I am playing Solitare while I am waiting for the web page to load.
(Adding a 56k modem didn't make accessing any better.)

When I notice that the Explorer 3rd page is just sitting there with no data,
I know that it will not continue. There is NO error message displayed/ I am
running Solitare, the mouse works OK, and when i hit Command-Option-ESC,
Explorer finally aborts. Why did it kill Explorer, if its running in the
background? And I haven't been drinking.
