I am a long time subscriber (mostly just lurking) to Quadlist, but my B&W G3 has
crashed and burned and I need help finding out what it is.
Hardware: 300mhz G3, 384mb memory, internal Zip & CD ROM
OS: 8.6
My wife & kids were rearranging the house (& computer) while I was away overnight and
when I came back here were the symptoms:
Computer was on, my wife was playing SimCity 3000, I like to restart after because
it seems to bog down performance otherwise (maybe my
imagination).
On restart, I got chimes but startup hung up before monitor lit. Tried restarting a
number of times, eventually got it to boot to a Norton CD.
No problems found.
Restarted again, chimes but no monitor again. Son said there was a disk in the Zip
that was clicking and wouldn't read (Ohmigod, ClickofDeath?)
opened up, got it out, same symptoms.
Tried repeated startups (thrashing here), got to the point where there were not even
chimes.
Called my bro-in-law (designs supercomputers, works & plays on Macs), disconnected
both IDE connectors (HD & CD/Zip) along with power.
Started up, chimed, monitor lit up, got the ?/system folder icon.
Power down, hook up CD only, chimed, boot on CD.
Power down, hook up HD, no chime, no boot.
Can anyone help me?
