This may or may not be along the same lines. One of my machines is an
original PowerBook G3 that is hooked into a BookEndz dock with three SCSI
devices in a chain. All the IDs are fine. Sometimes, however, when I boot
from my DiskWarrior disk or my TechTool Pro 3 disk and run them, an odd
thing happens on restart: happy Mac, grey screen, mouse moves, and that's as
far as she gets.

If I turn off my ZIP drive on the SCSI chain and restart, no trouble.

I too have an ugraded 8500 and have never had any SCSI weirdness on it with
five peripherals in a chain.

Go figger.
