i had this problem, everyone told me my hd was dead, but stupidly i had plugged a parallel cable into my scsi port (hey, i am a pc guy, bought this beige G3 266 for my 9 year old (and so i could learn about macs-my first response is that all that stuff about windows being so much worse than mac is bull, i have had nothing but trouble with setting this guy up, but there are strengths as well as weaknesses), anyway this is probably not your problem but when i saw the mention of scsi, i recalled my little problem. by the by as soon as i removed the cable it ran like it should.
