I've been in the Apple technical field for 10 years. I have never had Norton Utilities "eat" a hard drive. Some drives are so bad off it may be Norton that "seems" to kill them, but it usually simply a coincidence. Alas, Norton is not a perfect piece of software and there were some glitches with the first OS X versions. You'll note that I stated to back up everything first as a precaution. Never use the the "x.0" version of Norton. It seems there's always something squirrely about it. Wait for the "x.1" update. Having personally witnessed Norton saving more drives than killing, I think it should be a part of your software troubleshooting toolkit. Disk Warrior is by far the best piece of troubleshooting software made for Mac.

Norton Utilities has a true "defrag" capability (it defrags all the
data) called "Speed Disk." It's one of the functions of the Norton
suite. It works very well in my experience. However, just to be safe,
backup everything before you run it. One never knows....

Norton is the biggest piece of junk software suite on the market. It is
sold to people who like to watch the blinky colorful animations of it fixing
the disk. It not only messes up people's data, but it has also been known
to render disks completely unusable without reformatting. As a full time
Apple Service Technician all I do is deal with these problems all day long.
So take it from me:

NEVER INSTALL ANYTHING NORTON ON ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!

That being said I have been known to attempt to run it from a CD (without
installing) in an emergency situation, but it rarely does any good.

Use Diskwarrior, PlusOptimzer and Apple's utilities and you will be fine.
