Here's an update! Just so this thread doesn't continue, I just wanted to let the list know that the problem has been fixed. Here's the scoop:
What I tried next after a suggestion to reset the NVRAM (thanks Kris), is taking off the jumper completely. It doesn't make sense to me to do that, but it worked. It recognized the drive right away and booted into OS 9 that I installed. Pretty weird, but I'm glad it worked. I thought setting the HD as Master would be the trick. OS X boots too. All is well, so far! :)
