well, i haven't read all of this thread, but-- the flyback provides several voltages for the monitor, including deflection. likely the flyback failed because of problems in those power supplies or less likely damaged them when it failed.
best bet is to replace all the diodes and caps that are part of power supplies derived from the flyback (easy to tell, they'll be near it and the diodes should connect directly to it). keep in mind you want the good electrolytic caps designed for switching power supplies (which is what the flyback is used for, besides the main high voltage) and fast diodes, i.e. shotky diodes. i suspect it's kinda of working when the power supplies aren't loaded but quickly overloading with a real signal. bad rectifiers and even more often bad caps can do that. when the caps start to fail, the effective capacitance drops, which increases current in the cap and diodes leading to possible diode failure and the cap getting hot (which of course makes the cap fail even faster). one really, really nice trick with electrolytics, the marking is on bands of a heatshrink material, usually when the caps start to go they get hot enough that it shrinks more and starts to pull off the top, sometimes even exposing some of the side of the can. this makes it easier to spot those that failed, though it's wise to replace the others nearby as they are likely also near failure. most likely, that's the problem. if it isn't, some serious probing or component testing is probably required. could be the deflection chips/transistors (some have the drivers in the chips, some have seperate driver transistors particularly for the horizontal which usually runs over 1kv at the horizontal deflection frequency, a nasty, nasty triangle wave should you have the misfortune to touch the transistor case, which i have, it hurts but fortunately i wasn't grounded). it could really be anything if it's not the power supplies. nearly any problem with the deflection etc. could pull out a power supply and the flyback if that's the transformer for it. good luck, monitors are a real pain, and people have told me i'm good with them...... i hate working on monitors almost as much as i hate working on my car. ----------- > But it also didn't give me any useful picture. Blood Shed feeds the demon and makes it stronger, Love and Forgiveness starve the demon. hatred and violence are the demon. It's a good movie, if you can realize it's a farce and know what a farce is.... -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
