The funny thing is, the computer seems to be working fine other than that. Apps, chat, burning CDs, all work.

Any wisdom? Should she just reinstall the OS? Should she reinitialize the drive and then reinstall the OS?
Before you do anything drastic double check the finder preferences and make sure the check box to "Show hard drives on the desktop" has not become unchecked?
