Ain't it great? Apple brags about the computer it wants to sell you, tells
you how many PCI slots it has and how much memory it will hold. So you buy
it (G-4) and put in a few PCI cards (USB, SCSI, video) and max out the RAM
(1500 gigs), and then you try to install OS X on it, and and you get
nothing but hang-ups, gray screens, and "kernel panics."
How come? Well, say the techs at Apple and OWC, OS X doesn't like a lot of
the hardware it finds in PCI slots: USB, SCSI, or non-Apple video cards.
It's also very fussy about what kind of RAM it finds in the RAM slots. It
also may not like certain fonts in the Font folder. It may not be happy
with your new Pioneer DVD burner. It doesn't like this, and it doesn't like
that. All the stuff that works fine in 9.2.2 may not be good enough for
fussy new OS X.
So, what am I supposed to do, to get X to install on my computer? "Pull all
your cards" they tell me. "Pull all your RAM except the first stick. Take
all the fonts out of your Fonts folder. Put the old CD burner back in. Try
this. Try that."
Damn, I only wanted to install OS X, not rip the guts out of my entire computer system trying.
If OS X is so fragile and fussy to install, then Apple can keep it. OWC
agreed to take back the install CDs I bought from them and refund my money.
Now if only I can get Apple to take back the iLife suite I bought (fat
chance, I bet). I'll buy Toast 5 for OS 9 to burn my DVDs.
OS X sucks!

Sounds like somebody needs to get a grip. OS X is the best operating system out there right now.
New or used system? If you'd been paying attention for the last two years, you would know that you can't just stick crap in a machine before installing OS X and expect it to install. Like trying to put Toyota parts in a Cadillac engine and expecting it to run..... I have been running 10 on my 9600 for a LONG time which is FULL of pci cards as well as ram.
Their advice was excellent. Not sure why you'd want to pull fonts, tho. You need better ram for OS X (like my wife's car needs 93 octane gas) naturally and I have over a gig in the 9600. USB cards can be fine and video cards as well. Everyone knows that Mac Radeon cards are fully compatible.
OS X is definitely the way to go when you get it installed. My G5 has never and will never see OS9 Classic and I don't miss it a bit.....
