Greetings all. My 2 worth. Tom, my first experience w/ OS X was near identical to your "at present" frustrating experience. The issue was bad RAM. Try replacing that (are you using used sticks from other units? That you had laying around and wanted to try out?) with known-to-work cards and see what happens. In my case, I had bought new, warranted sticks from a reputable firm and thought to myself "it *surely* couldn't be the RAM (i.e. it *must* be Apple's fault!)" - turns out I was wrong; I followed the advice from others on this list and I was all set, and I love OS X. Don't give up yet! Moving to X will be worth it. Best regards, Dana
