all versions of i.e. share a common lack of concern on microsoft's part to be secure, and writing a program without thinking about security guarantees that it will have security problems, and that it will have security related flaws which are not easily fixed after the fact with a code patch (you can't make a good tire for your' car with paper mache (sp?), and if you try it really doesn't matter what you do to improve it once you've started down that bumpy road).
note that many of the browsers have a feature where they can identify themselves as another browser, so that some websites will work better. i'd try that, it's been a while since i played with opera or icab but i believe both of them have this feature. java and javascript are similar, java can load and run continuously even after you've left a page, never use it, no one does other than those trying to break in! java script runs inline with a web page and is more limited, only runs once (though there are loops) and is gone when you leave the page that had the java script. many sites use java script, including nearly all shopping sites. many sites work fine with java off, and it does avoid some small problems (though there have occasionally been security problems with java script as well) and makes spy ware to monitor you across sites a little more difficult and makes it somewhat easier to block ad sites by blocking their ip# in your firewall, but often there is a loop that will try many times to load the add in which case things will be slowed down as it tries over and over to load the ad, with java script off it can only try once to load an ad (or a pop up window, the windows that re-open themselves do so with java script usually). however, many sites do use java script for good things now so i usually leave it on and just avoid ad rich sites.
