I dont write drivers or OSes but how hard can it be to add scsi support?

I think you answered your question there. :-/

At any rate, are SCSI drives really twice as expensive as ATA drives?

Dirtcheapdrives.com sells a SATA150 200 Gb drive for $124; they sell a Seagate SCSI Ultra 160 181 GB drive for $825. Both are 7200 rpm, 8mb buffer drives.

Six and a half times as much money for an equivalent drive. (SATA 150 is 150 Mb/sec, ultra 160 is 160, obviously)

SCSI drives are very expensive.

Because you would need 2 RAIDed SATA drives to be ALMOST as fast as a single Ultra320 scsi drive. And I am admittedly unfamiliar with fibre channel technology.

In theory...and that's only doing drive to drive copies. Fiber channel is faster and can maintain higher bandwidth, which is why it's used in high end server applications. Apple's fiber channel controller with the XRAID is a 2Gb one which is alleged to put things through at 400MB/sec. (note the capital B; bytes not bits)

Anyway, I may take your advice and sell my SCSI equipment in favor of an SATA setup. Id rather get it to work somehow. even my "old" Ultra 160 drive
is faster than SATA.

Only if it works! A working Yugo will beat out a Lamborghini up on the blocks every time.

Better disk I/O will only help performance if disk I/O is the bottleneck.
