There's not much in a x86 Mac that's "special".  Most of it is 
off-the-shelf parts.  The desktops are high-quality (lowest repair 
rate in the industry).  The laptops are ... sigh (highest repair rate 
in the industry).

What could they do to "fit" the system to the OS?  Intel controls 
most of it now - they provide most of the chips and specify how 
everything interconnects etc.  This isn't the old days, when Apple 
put a bunch of custom chips on the board.  Think about it -- when you 
slap WIndoze on an x86 Mac, what doesn't work?  Now look at the 
hackintosh projects, running OS X on generic PC hardware FASTER than 
on x86 Macs...
