Generally it's advised that if the game says that an opponent is a "deadly combatant," it's a good idea to start out with normal attacks. But ou never really know how you're going to roll your numbers, so there isnt really a surefire way to win except to have a magic power at a high enough level to do decent damage. Destrution is the most effective in combat, but Shadow Magic has the added advantage of being the only power that lets you use your weapon at the same time.
