Hi Mike,

The crowd sound just indicates how close you are to the wall.  Now the other 
sounds, when you are on a straightaway they indicate which way the next turn 
will be by being on that side.  In the turn they indicate which way that turn 
turns.  And both in a turn and on a straightaway the louder the sound the 
closer you are to the end of that section.  And there is the sound of your 
tires going over an expansion joint at the beginning of each section.  And with 
practice on a track you get to know how many times the sound repeats or exactly 
when you are approaching the end of that section.
