Interesting stuff there Zack.
As I said, the promo from sherman actually put me off and reading his own
blog comments on the site I find him to be just as smarmy and self
congratulatory in person as I suspected from what he writes on his website.
I have tried asteca and the pentori prequal. Asteca was nice, if basically
a glorified tutorial (and I seriously wonder whether he needed to go on
research for that or whether it was an excuse for a free holiday), pentori
prequal had some very nicely written background but some quite irritating
guess the parza moments, one for instance which really! got on my whick and
made finishing the game impossible until I E-mailed howard.
In fairness to him, he did respond to my question and give an answer which
let me complete the game, ---- and this for a free game. While the toll free
wrant he posted doesn't really apply (I am in the Uk afterall), he did at
least offer tech support.
As to the actual games, I tried the demos of the first mile and pentori
first light.
first light I seemed to get stuck on the first puzle of the game, let alone
finish the demo, where as first mile I spent most of my time wandering
around looking for something practically useful to do.
The games didn't seem bad, ---- but there was nothing in those parts of the
demos astounding enough to really make me wish to go on and buy the full
game, indeed as the chap in the blog pointed out, I have played as good or
better from the If archive.
Beware the Grue!
Dark.

Hi Anouk,
No, Gargoyle probably won't work. I haven't been able to get anything out
of it at least. I still think Filfor, as previously mentioned, is
probably your best accessible interpretor on Windows.
As for Malinche's reputation, they are guilty of false advertising at the
very least. My own experience with their games suggests they are not of
good quality. There are infinitely better free offerings available.
If you're curious what I mean by false advertising, I suggest you have a
look at http://www.davelgil.com/wordpress/?p=178
This explains all about Malinche and its reputation and practices far
better than I could.
Best,
Zack.

Hi Zachary,
Do you think gargoyle will work?
I still find it strange though because all the other inform games work
fine for me no problem.
Now I am also quite itnerested about malinches reputation...
I thought endgame wasnt too good (too much arcade) but I thought
greystone and pentari first light were enjoyable enough.

Hi,
Your problem isn't with the game per se, it's with the program you're
using to play it. The latest versions of Frotz have an unfortunate
problem when it comes to accessibility on Windows, perhaps something to
do
with the way text is rendered on screen. I suggest Filfor as an
alternative which is more readable.
To return to the subject of the games themselves, might I suggest that
you
avoid Malinch on general principles? The company and developer have,
well, a reputation in the interactive fiction community, and not the
good
kind. I highly doubt your game experience will be worth your while.
Hope this helps,
Zack.
