Greetings.
Gamepads are in no wise restricted to one particular design or standard.
They can have as few as one button (though this might be pointless), and
have as many buttons and features as the developer desires to implement.
There are, for example, Super Nintendo-styled game pads which have the
button layout of the SNES, and lack the dual analog sticks that are
representative of the Playstation controllers.
Most game pads nowadays model themselves after modern console controllers,
usually possessing four or more face buttons (underneath the right thumb),
two or more shoulder buttons (meant to be accessed via the index/middle
finger), a start and select button in the middle of the device, a four-point
arrow (POV) control on the left, one or more analog sticks towards the
bottom of the controller, among other features (Niko, for example, has a
controller with a built-in fan to help keep your hands dry during gameplay).
Of course, all these buttons are dynamic, so can usually be reassigned to do
whatever the user/developer wishes.
As an example, the Logitech Rumblepad II has about twelve accessible
buttons: the four on the shoulders, four on the face, two in the middle, and
the two analog sticks may be depressed to act as buttons 11 and 12.

I've used a gamepad at my friends house on the play station. However, it
can be limited in many ways. Gamepads don't have that much buttons, apart
from the one that I saw but I might be wrong.

I've never seen one either. Me, I'd like to get my grubby little paws on
a good joystick for games like TDV if someone could recommend a good one.

Having never used, or even gotten my fingers on a game pad, can someone
describe a good one that might be used in games for the blind and how
they work, compared to a joystick? Heck, I don't even remember the
model of the joystick I have, but Thomas Ward did a very good review of
it. I got it for around $15 at Wal-Mart some time ago, and the cord is
retractable.
