i've noticed the really good echoes in sarah, where are an improvement on
those in shades, but I'd utterly forgotten about the stairs, ---- a good
example though.
I actually need to play sarah again myself!

In my Sarah game, I have more echo on the sound of her walking through
rooms.
When she reaches a stair, I reduce the echo and raise the pitch to
indicate a different surface.

I will agree with clemment there, I ws at the castleton caverns last
summer and indeed there was a huge amount of distinguishable echoes in the
various chambers, though whether these translate into something you could
put into a game I'm not sure.
