Hi Rich and all.
There are a couple manufacturers of these tanks that I am aware of. The
original manufacturer that started making them was Kanami, a Japanese
company that made various types of toys and models, most of them high end.
They originally had a Japanese type 90 tank, the U.S. Abrams tank and I
think some of the other NATO countries' tanks as well. You could spend
around 200 to 300 bucks per tank if memory serves depending on the exchange
rate at the time so these things were not cheap. Like I said these were
pretty high end, they were running models that you could play with but they
were detailed and painted very nicely so they could be display models as
well. They originally shot airsoft pellets out of the cannon. Later Kanami
came out with versions that had infrared cannons that you could shoot at
each other, there is a receptor on top of the turret. The tanks can drive
and shoot at the same time and the turrets can turn most of the way around.
If you score a certain number of hits your tank is shut down and you lose
the game.
Ok so much for history. I am not sure if Kanami is still making these or
not but whether they are or not there are a couple other companies. The
tanks I buy are from VS, these are licensed Chinese knock-offs of the
original Kanami models. The good thing about buying the licensed models is
that in theory they have to maintain a quality standard and make the tanks a
certain way and this seems to actually be the case in my experience with the
VS products. I have had very good luck with the ones I have, have not had
any problems or quality issues with either one. People have told me that
the painting and detail work are very nice on both of them. I've had mine
for several years now and although I don't run them every day or anything
they both still run perfectly. Like the Kanami models you can get either
airsoft or infrared models, I personally have the infrared ones because I
mainly drive my tanks inside. I have a West German Leopard tank and a U.S.
Abrams tank. I may eventually pick up either a Soviet t80 or a couple of
the WW II ones that VS has come out with in the last couple years. However
as you've probably gathered from my recent messages I've gotten more into
the flying things over the last couple years and now these hovercraft that
Trouble has mentioned sound real real interesting. Too many toys, not
enough money or time, lol.
Anyhow, I hope this has been helpful let me know if you have any other
questions. Oh by the way, I have gotten my tanks from www.toyeast.com but
you can get them from quite a few places from what I understand.
Laters.
Tom
