I use ADSL so my knowledge of cable modems is zip ... however... Assuming that your cable modem is a box with a network connection (TP/BNC etc) then you might try using something like the NETGEAR RT314 (http://www.netgear.com/product_view.asp?xrp=4&yrp=12&zrp=55) - these devices handle the connection to the modem and network login and provide NAT and DHCP to whatever you hook up on your side. I have one and run an NT server, Windows XP-Pro, FreeBSD and Linux boxes simultaneously. One nice feature is that it include a built-in client for dyndns.org so you can get a free domain for your dynamic IP address ... check http://batonrouge.homeunix.org - running Apache 2.0 and SSH. You can admin the Netgear box to hide everything or just expose individual ports to the net - mine hides all the machines except the FreeBSD box.
