I recommend the Netgear router also. I run the Toshiba Cable Model PVC1100 with the Netgear Router RT314 (thanks to Edmund for helping me get it set up).
It is easy to temporarily reconfigure (unsecurely) so that Cox can easily ping all the way into your network and your computer of choice. This is one way for Cox to determine if the problem is theirs or yours. I have one and run an NT server, Windows XP-Pro, FreeBSD and Linux boxes simultaneously. One nice feature is that it include a built-in client for dyndns.org so you can get a free domain for your dynamic IP address ... check http://batonrouge.homeunix.org - running Apache 2.0 and SSH.
