I disagree with these statements on two levels.

1) Try apply this reasoning to other projects - should attempt to build
upon Avalon or Apache httpd for that matter, or choose not to simply
because it isn't controlled by a corporation like Microsoft or Sun?

2) Look at history.  How may times have you had changes to make or issues
to address when stepping up to a new level of the JDK?
