Comment (by thorkilnaur):
Although I have been considering this for quite a while, there are some
rather fundamental questions that I believe should be answered:
1. Off the top of my head (I haven't seached the Wiki recently, I must
admit), I recall three types of binary installs for Macs: (a)
"Traditional" Unix-like binary installs; (b) Mac .dmz packages that target
some Mac OS X installation program; (c) !MacPorts (earlier: !DarwinPorts).
Which of these should we support? My answer would be "all", but I am not
really sure.
1. Then there is the question of what to include in such a package with
some gcc and gmp as prime candidates. My answer would be "nothing", but I
guess that I am not in agreement with what we try to do for ordinary Mac
users in this. However, it seems possible that some mechanism could exist
that took care of this, but I simply don't know. An installer that
silently installes something like gcc or gmp would not fall in my taste.
1. And there is the Intel/PPC question. And related: Universal binaries.
Currently, I am only capable of generating a traditional binary install
for a PPC Mac. So facing all these difficult questions with such limited
capabilities and knowledge, I must admit that I have so far chosen to stay
silent on these matters. But I am ready to work on them as the answers to
the difficult questions (there could be more that I haven't thought about)
become more clear.
Best regards
Thorkil
