I thought BT would insist on my switching to VOIP but evidently not; so I shall still have a copper line from the pole to the house & phone after the upgrade!
Whilst you may well still keep a copper line from the pole to the house they are in the process of switching off analogue phone service which would mean your phone number would need to switch to VoIP.
The end date for the transition keeps being pushed back but I think it's now early 2027. Before then your number will be converted to VoIP and your line will be converted to SOGEA. Where before you had analogue telephone service over your copper pair with VDSL piggy-backed on top, after the conversion the line is used solely for your VDSL connection.
We converted our landline number to VoIP nearly 10 years ago so our switch to SOGEA merely involved a few minutes of down time. If you still have analogue service on your line then your provider should contact you to arrange some kind of VoIP box to put at your end.
