If the fuel level is below about half you shoud be O.K. to remove
the gauge . You can drain as much fuel as needed with your wing tank
sump drain. As for gaskets and cleaning the gauge inside, I did mine
and found it very simple. Go to the auto store and get some 1/16" cork
gasket material that is impregnated with neoprene. This is very good
stuff. Cut out gaskets after tracing around the ring that holds the
gauge in place. After marking the screw holes, use a small hole punch
or leather punch to make a nice job. Clean the glass. The numbers on
the gauge itself can be wiped clean with a little laquer thinner. Mine
came up bright and shiny. Just make sure you have the gaskets in the
right place. No metal to metal surfaces. Snug all screws down and
recheck in a day or so when the new gaskets have settled in. Normally
the cost of this is only a dollar or so and works well. P.S. Make sure
the screw holes in the gasket are slightly smaller than the screws for a
good seal.
