Basically, he released a worm that exploited the BIND hole and got into a
bunch of systems in 1998. Instead of the FBI busting him, they took
advantage of the situation, and Max did some volunteer work to help the FBI
capture a bunch of phone phreaks that penetrated 3com's PBX system.
Scary note: They also had him collect people's PGP keys that attended
Defcon, so the FBI could try and match people's real names with their
'hacker identities'.
But once the FBI asked Max Vision [Max Butler] to wear a wire and record one
of his personal friends, he sought legal advice (for the first time since
the FBI raid). Obviously the FBI didn't like this, and told him if he didn't
cooperate, they were going to come down on Max.
He was sentenced to 18 months in prison for launching the worm.
