The way i connected the hoses is to use 4 adaptors from a scotoiler kit (
they screw into the port and use the vacuum to make the scotoiler work )
normally only one is needed for a scotoiler but i managed to get hold of 3
more.
My hoses just pushed on to the adaptors.

You could get a slightly larger hose and slip it over the port one end and
your vacuum hose the other end , use a piece approx 25/30mm long , then push
your vacuum hose in as far as it will go ( ie to butt up to the port ). If
it's a tight fit use some WD40.
The way i've described won't affect the balancing as long as the hoses are a
tight fit .

If your vacuum hoses are very soft and rubbery they may just about stretch
over , use some WD40 and warm the end of the hose just before trying to fit.
Try to avoid getting to much WD40 inside the vacuum hose.

As to space you can lift the tank up a fair bit , while still connected , i
lift mine right up and out , and balance it on the frame , but you have to
force it a bit to get the back end past the seat lug at the back of the
tank.

If you have any more questions i'll try to connect to the web every now and
then for the rest of today , could you let me know how you get on .
