If the bioships have been gengeneered by humans*, it is likely that cooperating with/working for humans is something they like on an instinctive level. So thoose frolicking in astereoid belts on their own, without a mission will likely be rare. Though the longer bioships already exist, the larger the chance, that some subspecies has formed by ordinary evolution.

An other point to consider would be if there are ever really childlike bioships? The bioship "brain" might mature in a different enviroment, like propably a simulation and only be put in a real ship after it's grown up.

If you have artifically designed the species, making an interface to a spezies dependent holodeck should not be a large leap. And such an enviroment might be considered more child friendly as it has no real dangers, but also no real hindrances to have the childs experiment.

In that case, it would be a possible delusion for a bioship, that it believes to be now in an advanced holodeck, and only if it passes that, it will be left out in real reality.

*Whatever the exact definition of human might be would be setting spezific.
