Hello Johannes,

I had this idea that researchers would stumble across alien scout ships,
not freighters or liners. Big freighters travel between industrialized
worlds, not in the wilderness, so the first clues come when mankind (?)
expands to the fringes of the precursor (?) space.

With freighters or liners i was thinking about a scenario, where someone had populated the area before, but does no longer (or has only reduced population and technology anymore). A bit like the Asimovs foundation background, or the ancients of traveller.

For large scouptships you could take Star Treck as inspiration. Take all experts you will most likely never need, like historians for every era of your own history. Propably it is politically neccessary to include experts of the "lesser" fields, to get funding. Take families of crewmembers and similiar extras, and all the people necessary for managing the extras with you. Propably officers need a household staff or a harem of a certain size as status symbol.

Then your deckplans will have a lot in common with a liner, with different classes of people on board with different amount of access to different areas.

That would work for jump FTL carriers, too -- the jump ship carries
insystem ships, which could carry orbital shuttles.

The subcraft have the same size and shape, to fit into the standard
cradles, but internally they can be quite different, depending on
their role. Confusing for the researchers.

And it can make sense for a scout. Jump in and spread out over the solar system doing your close scanning paralell. Have some specialized vessels for certain types of finds.
