How close can you get the drop troops to the planet before detection and
then get them down to surface fast and safe as much as any airborne troops
are.
Nazis was famous for shooting paratroopers but they also used paratroopers
several times successfully even if costly. I suspect the British also shot
at Paratroopers but the fun of war (stories told by the victors).
Crete being one of the most succesful for the Germans.
And Market Garden being one of the most for the Allies..I believe even the
Soviets tried it but not heard anything about it?
Airborne combined with other means, be it gliders or like. Chaff and like.
i suspect alot has to do with intent and why your sending drop troops down?
Fast and furious with alot of back up taking out other ships and like as
they come into the system, after jumping in as close as they dare but also
as long as they dare.. If the enemy can detect your jump they can react.
Overt vs Covert..
Covert, get as close as you can, helps if you have someone who has a
legitimate reason to be there, they drop you off as close as possible,
disguised as something already there, such as an asteroid that is on a
course for the planet already (meteor showers and like). They are disguised
as meteors basically and they are using an ablative or like shield to get to
the planet surface thru the atmosphere. Things maybe adjusted due to type of
world, their TL and availibility to detect and react to your little sneak
attack..
Unit names like Ricos Meteor might be funny but kept hidden or ... Only be
able to use the technique only a few times until someone gets wise of it and
makes better detection or trains their people to look for it.
Overt, you come in as close as possible to the planet/system, pushing people
out the doors and shooting as you go, chaff and distractors and like, as
well as some sort of artillery or like prep of the landing site to
destroy/force to ground any local forces that can shoot at them or resist
and come in fast and hard, same ablative means but now its a wild chariot
ride down, either on a ablative shield or a shuttle craft or like. Glider
powered or other wise, sort of.
Shuttle comes down hard and fast, throwing people out as it goes..

Bret replied to me:
A cheap, small hyperdrive might be included in order to get out of a
system that is a hot zone. I would say this depends heavily on the
philosophy of the military using the ship and how they see it
fitting into their overall strategy.
If the dropships have hyperdrive, the true interstellar craft can
stay safe in the outer systems. That's worth some expense.
The biggest variable would be how important is it to the military to
preserve trained personal. If the attitude is that drop troopers are
quick and easy to replace, there aren't going to be any extras. If
they are always short of trained soldiers, the drop ship is going to
have a lot more equipment making it more likely that it can get
people back out of there.
Even so, there is the question how to best preserve the troops. Is
it a good idea to use payload for autodocs and artificial gravity
(good for first aid and damage control, not just for comfort) or
is it better to spend it on bigger sensors and point defense?
I have a draft with some habitability upgrades, including a small
galley and a toilet. And "only" 900 miles sensor range.
Next bunch, a near future suit.

Onno
