It still happens: when the Israel-Hezbollah conflict broke out in 2006, the British happened to have a small carrier and a landing ship transiting the Med. They took a load of people out of Beirut, and provided landing points for helicopters shuttling people to Cyprus. Drop ships might well be designed for evacuating casualties, who need to be handled gently; like most sea warships, they'll probably be fairly flexible.
